Richardson ISD: First grader brought loaded gun to elementary school

Richardson ISD officials say a first grader brought a loaded gun to Hamilton Park Elementary Monday morning.

In a letter sent to parents, Principal Michael Thomas explained a staff member found the gun in the student’s backpack while reviewing homework. Staff members were immediately able to confiscate the gun from the girl and alerted district resource officers and police.

“There is no indication of a threat to any student or staff member, and after consulting with Dallas PD and conducting an investigation, we are confident the student did not intend to use the weapon or harm anyone,” Thomas wrote. “The young age of the child contributed to a lack of understanding regarding the serious nature of the situation.”

Officials believe the gun was put in the little girl's backpack by a family member over the weekend and forgot about it.

“This situation can serve as an opportunity to speak with members of your household about making good decisions and thinking through the potential consequences of choices and actions as they relate to school safety,” Thomas wrote.

It’s unclear if the student’s parents will face any charges. No injuries were reported.
