Suspect dead after officer-involved shooting in Southwest Dallas

DALLAS - Dallas police swarmed an Oak Cliff neighborhood Wednesday morning after an officer shot and killed a man during a carjacking investigation.

Police say a plainclothes officer was investigating a Tuesday night carjacking when he found the stolen vehicle on Virginia Boulevard Wednesday morning just before 10 a.m. When the carjacking suspect, Anthony Garcia, 24, noticed the officer, police say he got out of the stolen vehicle and approached the officer with a gun. The officer then shot and killed Garcia.

Realtor Dustin McDonald was in the area and saw part of the drama unfold. Though he didn’t recall hearing gunshots, he says police had a man on the ground at one point.

“He was like this close to my truck. I honking the horn and he just peeled off. Then, like I said, the cops came and cornered him,” the realtor said. “He gets out of the car, lays on the ground and then probably about 30 seconds later 10 more cop cars showed up. Then they all went to the back of the house where I was at.”

It's unclear who the person was that McDonald saw on the ground. And as for the SWAT situation at the home nearby, that all started after police say they got a tip that another person of interest may be hiding inside. It turned out there was no one else of interest inside the home, and police pulled out.

Garcia's distraught family was at the scene. One man that claimed to be a relative said police had no reason to shoot Garcia.

“The cops gunned down my cousin for nothing,” the man said.

Police say Garcia had a lengthy criminal history. He was last arrested in Dec. 2015 for family violence. He’s also been arrested several times for marijuana possession and burglary.

No officers were injured.
