The Tarrant County medical examiner confirmed the bones found in a wooded area of Southlake are indeed human.

A utility worker found the remains just off White Chapel near Highway 114 Monday afternoon. They were scattered and appeared as though they had been there for some time, police said.

Police said the ME's office will now begin determining whether the bones belonged to a male or female. It could take several months for them to determine a cause of death and make a positive identification.

In the meantime, investigators will return to the area where they were found to search for more evidence. They are expected to be at the scene most of Tuesday and possibly on Wednesday.
