Possessions stolen from family during move to TX

For many families, moving can be extremely stressful. But for one military family moving to North Texas, stressful doesn't even begin to describe their experience.

Someone stole the Romero family’s moving trailer, with all their belongings and their car attached to it, while they slept at a hotel.

After making the 20-hour drive to North Texas from San Diego, the family decided to spend the night at a Mesquite Hampton Inn near the convention center. Around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Mesquite police say the family's moving truck and car in tow were stolen from the parking lot.

Sgt. First Class Peter Romero, his wife, and their five kids, ages 2 to 13, were forced to move into their new home with only the clothes on their back until their realtor and neighbors started bringing over air mattresses and silverware, a jar of peanut butter and basically anything they could to help.

While the Romeros’ car was found stripped in Seagoville, their realtor started a GoFundMe page to help recoup their belongings -- what the family estimates was a loss of about $20,000.

But the Romeros say things like military medals and baby pictures are priceless.

Hours later, Seagoville police say they got a tip that a Penske truck was parked at a vacant house.

Mesquite police were contacted and got a search warrant for the property and found all of the Romeros’ belongings, including everything from to the children's bikes to the family's furniture to even Peter's social security card and Army bag full of his military documents.

As officers carefully carried the property back onto the moving truck, Peter Romero says he's relieved and thankful that his roller coaster day has the ending he hoped for.

The owner of the vacant home says police called him earlier Thursday, asking about the truck.

The owner says he called the person he knew was staying there and that he told the homeowner he was helping his mom move, and that the truck was there temporarily because they got a flat tire.

Mesquite police say this is still an active investigation and that no one has been arrested yet.

It's also too early to say how many people may have been involved.
