Police: School burglary suspect charged at officers with a hammer

- Irving police say they were confronted by a man with a hammer that had broken into a school.

The school district reported seeing the man on video burglarizing Farine Elementary School on Metker Street around 1:30 a.m.

When responding officers tried to confront him at the school, police said he charged at them with a hammer.

One of the officers fired a shot, but did not hit the suspect. He then surrendered and was taken into custody. No one was hurt, police said.

Police said suspect will likely face burglary and other charges. The case is still being investigated.

The school was already scheduled to be closed on Monday and Tuesday because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and a teacher development day. Classes will resume as planned on Wednesday, according to Irving ISD.

“We thank the Irving ISD security team and the Irving Police Department for working around the clock to keep our schools safe,” the district said.
