Police kill armed man outside Dallas apartment complex

A man was shot and killed as police responded to reports about a man with a gun outside an apartment complex.

It happened late Sunday night at the Avondale Parc Apartments near Highway 75 and Royal Lane in North Dallas.

Dallas police said officers were at the complex for an unrelated incident when residents told them someone had been firing shots in the parking lot.

The officers found 24-year-old Gerardo Ramirez and tried to confront him. But as they approached, he opened fire. The officers fired their weapons in return.

Ramirez was taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, where he died.

His girlfriend told police that he did not want to live and wanted to shoot at the officers. He may have also been high on drugs.

Police recovered a semi-automatic handgun and a box of ammunition at the scene.

The two officers involved will be placed on administrative leave until an investigation is complete.

Dozens of gunshots from the shooting can be heard on cellphone video from a witness.

"This video is important because it shows the actions before the officers ever arrive,” said Deputy Chief Rob Sherwin with the Dallas Police Department.

The video was taken from an apartment balcony.

Other witnesses told FOX 4 about what they saw and heard.

"I hear it, the three shots that he takes right there,” said witness Teresea Maced. “Then he comes to the mail and shoots again. And then he was running around the cars. When the police come, he shoots to them."

"The gate was closed, so there was a lot of police officers hopping over the fence, trying get this guy,” said witness Ben Suh.
