Police investigating whether escaped sex offender is linked to robbery

State troopers confirmed Thursday that a fugitive sex offender from Fort Worth was spotted Wednesday night in Dallas.

Police in North Richland Hills are investigating whether that man, 44-year-old Charles Raymond Sprague, is responsible for a kidnapping and robbery in their city.

Sprague, a Fort Worth halfway house escapee, was last spotted Wednesday around 7:30 in Dallas at the Austin Street Shelter. He was driving a white, early-model Honda Accord with a black rear bumper.

North Richland Hills police are investigating after a woman was confronted in a parking lot Wednesday. A man with a gun forced her into her car and made her drive to a vacant building on Iron Horse Drive.

He eventually let her go, but took her vehicle, a 2008 Toyota 4Runner.

Police say the suspect's description matches that of Sprague's, except for the hair color. However, police say Sprague may have tried to alter his look or his hair may have appeared shorter in the lighting.

Authorities say Sprague cut off his ankle monitoring device.

He's served two prison sentences since 1991 -- one for aggravated sexual assault and another for aggravated sexual assault and kidnapping.

Sprague is described as a Native American who is 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighs about 240 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

When he left he was wearing a black leather jacket, dark jeans and white sneakers and he carrying a clear backpack.

DPS warned Sprague has an extensive criminal history that includes aggravated kidnapping. He is considered dangerous.

Anyone with information should call 911 or DPS at 214-861-2040 or 817-657-1999.
