Plano burglary suspect arrested while leaving through window

Plano police arrested a man as he was coming out of the window of a house that they say he burglarized on Wednesday.

They originally thought he might be connected a string of other recent burglaries, but now they aren't so sure.

A 17-year-old boy was inside home in the 3800 block of Suffolk Lane around 3 p.m. when the suspect started banging on the door.

The teen, named Riashat Ishmam, didn't answer and instead ran inside his parents' master bathroom, where he hid.

He called 911 and said that right after he gave dispatchers his address, his phone died. A few seconds later, he said the suspect forced his way into the master bedroom.

Ishmam said the man stole jewelry and then escaped out a back window, where police were waiting for him the backyard.

The suspect reportedly tried to tell officers that Ishmam's father owed him money for web design, but police didn't buy it.

Ishmam's home is about seven miles away from several other recent burglaries.

FOX 4 reported on a crime spree last month involving 20 burglaries in the span of about three weeks. They all happened in the evening hours and quality jewelry was stolen from the bedrooms.

But police no longer believe the man arrested Wednesday is responsible for those cases.

In each of those cases, the burglars were in and out in a matter of minutes, so even if they set off an alarm, they were gone when police arrived.

The department plans to continue its investigation.

In the meantime, officers encourage residents to answer, but not open the door for strangers. Say something like "I'll get it" or "Who is it?" while the door is still locked. This let potential burglars know people are home.

There is a property safety seminar for residents scheduled for 7 p.m. on Jan. 28 in the Council Chambers at the Plano Municipal Center.

Plano police will also host other personal safety, property safety and ID theft prevention seminars in February.
