Open carry, other new laws go into effect Jan. 1

Concealed handgun license holders can now carry weapons in the open in Texas. The law went into effect Friday morning.

The weapons must be in a holster and private property owners can still ban guns with a specifically worded sign, or by asking the person to leave.

Police in The Colony posted a funny video on their Facebook page to help people understand the new law.

More than 50 other new laws are going into effect in Texas this year.

Minor girls seeking a court order to get an abortion must now wait as long as five days for the court’s decision. If the judge fails to rule, the application is rejected.

All surviving spouses of deceased disabled veterans can now take a 100 percent property tax exemption and local governments in mid-sized and large communities must now provide online video access to public meetings.
