One dead after Dallas PD officer-involved shooting in North Oak Cliff

A wanted sex offender was killed in an officer-involved shooting in North Oak Cliff on Tuesday.

Dallas police said they were tipped off on the location of a 59-year-old male sex offender in the 1200 block of N. Bishop Avenue.

The department’s Sex Offender Apprehension Team and uniformed officers responded and found the man, later identified as Joe Cody, Jr., walking along Bishop Ave.

Police said they approached the suspect and he got out a handgun. He declined to drop the weapon despite verbal commands from police, so officer fired their weapons.

Police cannot say at this point if the man fired his weapon, only saying that four DPD officers fired theirs, killing him.

Footage from SKY 4 showed detectives focusing on a red sedan that had damage to its windows.

A few feet away from the vehicle, a dead body could be seen covered up by a tarp.

There were no reported injuries to any Dallas police officers.
