Fort Worth police officers shot a mentally disturbed man who they say pointed a gun at them.

They got a call around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday about a man waving a gun at a home near the intersection of E. E. Lancaster and Mt. Vernon avenues.

Officers said they’ve responded to calls at this home 69 times over the past 11 years. They were prepared for a domestic disturbance.

Two officers were on the way to the house when they spotted the suspect with a long gun about two blocks from the home. They told him to put the gun down but instead he raised it toward them, police said.

One of the officers fired two rounds from a police-issue shotgun, striking the man. The 53-year-old man died at the scene.

“Let me give you some statistics about the residence we were called to. In the last year, we’ve answered seven suicide attempts, 12 assist ambulance calls. The officer ordered him to drop the weapon. Instead of dropping it, the individual raised the weapon towards the officers,” said Officer Jimmy Pollozani with the Fort Worth Police Department.

A woman and child who were in a car were hit by flying glass and suffered minor injuries. No officers were injured.

The officers involved were placed on routine administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
