Oak Lawn man steps outside briefly, returns to find thief in his home

A Dallas man says he is beefing up security at his Oak Lawn apartment, after stepping out for a moment, and returning to find a complete stranger ransacking his place.

“He's crouched behind the counter, I just see a head and I'm like, ‘who are you?’” said Mark Simon.

Simon says he confronted the man and his friend snapped pictures. Fox 4 is blurring the man’s face because police have yet to charge him with a crime.

In the man’s backpack; Simon says he found $1,000 worth of electronics, including his Apple TV, Bose headset and other items.

Simon says he passed the crook in the apartment building’s hallway, as he stepped outside with a friend to grab something.

“I thought he looked a little unfamiliar, I hadn't seen him before, I thought he was a new neighbor.” said Simon.

Simon says his door autolocks after one minute, so the man must have gotten inside within that time frame. The man gave up the electronics, but escaped out the back door as they called police.

Sunday, While Fox 4 was compiling this story; our cameras caught a man in the lobby, who Simon says matches the description. Police questioned him, but didn’t arrest him, saying there’ wasn’t enough probable cause.

“I think people need to be aware that it can take less than a minute. Technology is great, but you have to do your part as well.” Said Simon.
