Nearly 2,000 people take part in 'The Big Event' in Grand Prairie

Nearly 2,000 people took part in a citywide clean-up effort in Grand Prairie on Saturday.

City Council Member Jorja Clemson helped launch the project called “The Big Event,” which is a massive one-day service project to help those in need.

About 1,800 volunteers fanned out to tackle dozens of projects across the city, including yard work, hauling debris and cleaning out flower beds.

Members of the South Grand Prairie High School baseball team were out doing projects at Garcia Elementary School.

"We have been doing lawn work, we've been pulling weeds, raking lawns, throwing trash away,” said Rebecca Flores Castro. “We're just really trying to beautify the community."

"The Big Event" was patterned off of a similar effort that started at Texas A&M University.
