A motorcycle rider was killed and his passenger was hurt when they were hit by a car in North Dallas.

Police said the motorcycle was apparently stopped in the right lane of the LBJ Freeway Express and the male motorcyclist had gotten off to retrieve a cellphone and money that fell from his backpack.

His female passenger was still on the bike when it was hit from behind by a blue Nissan Altima.

The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene. His passenger was hearing a helmet but still suffered serious injuries. She was alert and talking to paramedics as she was taken to the hospital, police said.

The driver of the car was shaken but not hurt. Police said he did stop to help.
