A man died after Dallas police said he took a curve too fast and lost control of his motorcycle in west Oak Cliff.

It happened around 9:30 p.m. Sunday on Loop 12 at Cockrell Hill Road. Police said 26-year-old Darian Thomas was traveling at a high rate of speed, hit a retaining wall and then crashed into a light pole.

Thomas died at the scene. His motorcycle landed several yards away.

Friends said Thomas had just celebrated his birthday last week. He worked for a security company in Richardson and had recently purchased his bike a few months ago.

The road was closed for about four hours while police investigated the crash.
