Mother-son duo diving into the fight against cancer

- A mother and son team are diving into the fight against cancer. They are both suiting up to swim in this weekend's Swim Across America fundraiser at Lake Ray Hubbard.

Lisa Hernandez is a mom who’s gone from the swimming sidelines to making her own waves in a fundraiser to pay for cancer research. And for this mom, the fight hits close to home.

Hernandez will be one of dozens of athletes making waves in this weekend's Swim Across America at Lake Ray Hubbard to raise money for cancer research.

Hernandez is a mom who, for nearly a decade, has supported her son Michael in the very same event and watched him grow into a skilled competitive athlete.

Two months ago, Hernandez learned her brother, Tom Litvay, was diagnosed with cancer. She made a spur of the moment decision to herself to learn to swim and take part in Swim Across America.

"My son was already planning to do the swim,” she said. “I thought, why not. I'll swim for him too. I mean I can learn."

The lesson reversed the family tide. Hernandez went from being Michael's cheerleader to becoming his student.

The mom and son team are ready for SAA this weekend and ready to support their family member in his fight against cancer.

Swim Across America raises money to fund clinical trials for cancer research. Pledges and support to this point for 2018 have reached more than $214,000.
