Mesquite 7-Eleven clerk fights, takes gun away from thief

A Mesquite 7-Eleven clerk fought off a thief by wrestling his gun away early Tuesday morning.

The incident happened about 2:30 a.m. at a location near 635 at Oates Drive and Northwest Drive.

It started as the thief, wearing all black, pointed a gun at the clerk's head. He forced the clerk to go behind the counter, open the register and dump the money in a bag. The thief ordered the clerk to open the safe and when he couldn't access it, the thief hit him.

That's when the clerk fought back and a long struggle ensued, with the clerk eventually taking the suspect's gun.

The two scuffled again, but the thief broke free and ran out of the store.

The clerk's injuries were minor, but store employees told FOX4 that he called and quit his job the day after the incident.

Mesquite police were still searching for the suspect as of Thursday afternoon. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (214) 373-TIPS or Mesquite Police at 972-285-6336.
