Man who killed Forest Hill couple in drunk driving crash to be released

FOREST HILL, Texas - A man who pleaded guilty to driving drunk and killing a Forest Hill couple will soon be out of prison.

Jose Salinas Gomez killed George and Gayle Moon last November. The couple's family now hopes he takes advantage of the shock probation he's been given.

Crosses mark the place where two lives were lost and taken by a drunk driver.

"I'll never see my aunt and uncle again,” Carrie Hoskins said. “This guy, he'll be able to see his family. He'll have a bit of a tough thing, but he's still breathing."

Jose Salinas Gomez was driving drunk when he killed 76-year-old George Moon and his 63-year-old wife, Gayle, in November of last year.

Hoskins and her daughter were driving her uncle to the hospital on Halloween night. They were also seriously injured.

Gomez got 10 years in prison with a safe bet that he'd get shock probation after about 6 months, and he did.

"That was such a light sentence,” said Hoskins. “You know what? We're already devastated. This is one more punch in the gut. You kidding me?"

Hoskins doesn't hide her disdain. But she's found a way to live with it.

"If he's a good guy hope, and I pray he is, I can't imagine living with that for the rest of my life,” she said.

Hoskins and her family convinced prosecutors to ask for several conditions on Gomez's probation. The judge ordered him to maintain the crosses at the accident site.

"It makes him remember what happened that night. It'll make him think every time he goes out there, he's going to remember what happened.”

And for as long as he is on probation, Gomez has to report for one day of jail each Halloween on the night of the crash.

"They're little things, but it's honoring my aunt and uncle,” Hoskins said. “My uncle George and my aunt Gayle, they will be honored by our family. But Jose, the man who killed them, he has to honor them as well."
