Stranded driver hit, killed by DART bus

A man was hit and killed by a DART bus in Downtown Dallas Tuesday morning.

According to the Dallas Sheriff’s Office, 24-year-old Brenton Smith had some mechanical problems with his Dodge Ram. He nearly hit the median and ended up stopped in the center lane of southbound Stemmons Freeway near Inwood Road.

A security guard saw it happen and stopped to help him. The two were on the shoulder, but for some reason Smith decided to walk back to his truck. The guard went with him to try to direct traffic.

DSO officials said the truck didn’t have any hazard lights on. An 18 wheeler swerved to avoid them, but the driver of a DART bus didn’t see it until it was too late.

The DART bus hit Smith and his truck. The security guard was not hurt.

DART said the driver involved has worked for them since 1989. He was heading to his normal route and did not yet have passengers on board.

The driver will undergo drug testing as a standard procedure, but is not expected to face charges. DSO ruled the crash was an accident.
