The jury sent Omar Mohammed to prison for five years, and he must serve six years of probation for hitting 73-year-old Terry Pinkston and leaving the scene.
Pinkston was seriously injured in the incident a year ago. He had a long, difficult recovery, but was able to testify.
Mohammed took the stand Friday morning.
"I learned the biggest lesson of my life. It changed my life," he said.
His attorney asked the jury to sentence him to probation.
The minimum punishment for Mohammad was probation, while the maximum was 20 years.
Following the sentencing, Pinkston took a moment to speak to Mohammad directly about what he had done.
