Man taken down by 'mama bear' during chase convicted of evading arrest

DALLAS - The carjacking suspect taken down by the so-called “mama bear” was convicted of evading arrest on Thursday.

A jury did find Artray Alexander not guilty of aggravated robbery, the second charge he was facing. The punishment phase starts Friday morning on the evading arrest conviction.

Prosecutors on Thursday showed dash cam video of the chase that happened last February. Alexander allegedly stole a man’s Dodge Charger and then sped through northeast Dallas.

The chase ended when Alexander crashed into Jessica Leissman’s minivan. Video from SKY 4 showed her and her boyfriend pulling the suspect out of the car.

Leissman told jurors that her 13-year-old son was in the van at the time. She said she was angry because Alexander was trying to run off after wrecking her family's only vehicle and nearly killing them.

Police said she was like a mad mama bear, holding on to him until officers arrived.

On Wednesday, the carjacking victim described his encounter with Alexander, who he said had a gun.

“When he did this, that’s when I threw my hands up. I slammed the door then I threw my hands up. Then I ran after the car,” Drecelus Hunter said.

Alexander faces between two and 10 years in jail for evading arrest.
