Macy's at Ridgmar Mall to close this year

As part of its plan to cut costs nationwide, Macy's is closing at Ridgmar Mall by the end of the year.

The owner of the mall was notified just weeks ago the Macy's at Ridgmar is one of the 40 stores across the country closing its doors. Macy's announced the plan to cut costs last year after what it calls "disappointing 2015 sales and earnings."

The company that owns the mall said Macy's closure works into its redevelopment plan.

"The opportunity now with Macy's leaving allows us to look at doing something that's even larger where we can bring in mixed use aspects to the property where we can add some residential, add potentially a hotel, more restaurants, open air retail, entertainment uses," said Garo Kholamian, president of GK Development.

For Macy's shoppers like Estelle Hernandez, the closure is one of those glass half full or half empty things.

"You're trying to decide whether it's good for one and bad for another but I mean Macy's being gone that's a negative because it does bring a lot of good clientele," said Hernandez.

Macy's is not the only to leave. Ridgmar is expected to lose Dallas-based luxury department store Neiman Marcus in 2017.
