Loved ones honor crash victims with musical tribute

A North Texas family was heading home on 35W after seeing Christmas lights when tragedy struck.

Their vehicle was hit from behind and a brother and sister both died.

However, instead of mourning, their loved ones gathered in celebration for a night of singing and laughter on Wednesday.

Gabbi Estelle, 19, aspired to be a photographer, while 23-year old Alex Trejo's passion was music.

Loved ones say the best way to heal from this heartbreaking loss is to honor one of the last plans they made.

Zachary Estelle, the victims’ brother, and his family were driving back home Monday after looking at Christmas lights at Texas Motor Speedway.

“We were laughing, giggling, singing Christmas songs, and then the next thing I know is I blacked out,” said Zachary.

Police say the family's car was rear-ended while in standstill traffic.

The impact of the crash killed Gabbi and Alex, and their parents were hospitalized.

They were supposed to be caroling door-to-door in Haltom City this week with family and friends, but after Monday, it had to be at the hospital.

“Gabbi would have wanted us to,” said her aunt, Renee Hernandez. “She wanted this, so we're going to do it whether we mess up, or we don’t sound good or we're goofy; we're going to do it.”

Losing two loved ones right before Christmas isn't easy, but nothing is stronger than a smile.

"We were sad when we got here, and now we’re happy,” said Hernandez.

Family members say the father was released from JPS Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, but the mother is still in the hospital with fractured ribs, among other injuries.

Witnesses say the driver was texting before the accident happened.

No word yet on if they'll face charges.
