Large pothole damages cars in Dallas

DALLAS - A big pothole caused big headaches for drivers in Dallas Thursday morning.

The gaping hole that opened up on the Irving Boulevard bridge near Regal Row damaged at least a dozen vehicles.

The unsuspecting drivers are now responsible for in some cased hundreds of dollars in repairs. Several of them blew out their tires and bent their rims. One driver even bottomed out so badly it cracked a radiator.

“I’m pissed because I’m missing work and this shouldn’t have happened. It’s dangerous. If a motorcycle would have hit it, that would have been it,” said Kimberly North.

Nohely Rodriguez admits she started crying after she hit it.

“Yea, I was really scared. I didn’t know what was going to happen. This is the first this has ever happened to me so I didn’t know what to do. I just pulled over and got myself together a little bit. I cried a little bit and then called my dad immediately,” she said.

Dallas officials suspect the recent rain caused the problem.

City workers have put a metal plate over the pothole for now, but they’ll need to come back in the future for a more permanent fix.

The workers can’t just pour asphalt into the hole because it has no bottom. It goes all the way through the bridge with only the rebar remaining. They will have to create a cement cavity before replacing the asphalt.

There is no timeline yet for the permanent fix.
