Lancaster police find driver who pointed gun at woman

Lancaster police have identified a driver who pointed a gun at a woman on Friday on I-35E.

Victoria Best posted photos and video of the incident on Facebook, which has been shared nearly 60,000 times.

Police are calling it a classic case of road rage. They say they’ve now heard both sides of the story. The man in the video told police the gun was self-defense.

“He said he saw something in the other person’s hand in the other driver’s hand,” said Detective Joseph Brickett. “He thought it was a weapon.”

Police said the road rage incident happened about 3 p.m. Friday on northbound I-35E close to I-20. The driver was aggressively braking and seemingly trying to cause an accident. That’s when Best pulled out her phone.

"I didn't even look at him. I just wanted him to know that I was recording so if he causes an accident it's going to be his fault," Best said. "It was really the look on his face that scared me the most. I wasn't sure if I wasn't recording if he would have shot me. It was a lot of things going through my mind but I was just scared most of all."

Best said she got to work and called police to report the incident on Friday. When she re-watched the video, that's when she saw the gun.

Brickett says once the news story aired and the images from the video were shared, Lancaster police had a lot of people calling in with information to identify the driver. Once they contacted the man, he willingly went in for questioning.

Charges are pending, but it’s in the hands of the district attorney’s office to decide what charges the man could face.

"You have aggravated assault with a deadly weapon,” Brickett said. “There's also disorderly conduct. It all depends on certain criteria that's met during the offense."

Police have not named the suspect since he is not facing any official charges at this time. He turned himself in, was questioned and then released as part of what Lancaster police are calling an ongoing investigation.

FOX 4 reached out to the man in the video through his employer to offer him a chance to tell his story. He has not yet responded.
