Lancaster officer dragged by car, fatally shoots suspect

A police officer in the Dallas County suburb of Lancaster shot and killed the driver of the car that was dragging him down a street.

Lancaster police said officers tried to pull the car over Sunday night during a traffic stop. Instead of stopping, the driver backed toward the officers.

The officers were able to jump out of the way but police said the driver tried to him them again. One officer was hit and dragged by the car.

Police said that officer feared for his life and fired shots at the driver, who lost control of the vehicle, hit a utility pole and died. His identity has not yet been released.

The officer was taken to the hospital. His condition is unknown.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.
