Kaufman County homeowners dealing with flooding aftermath

Kaufman County homeowners said a drainage pipe problem made a nearby lake overflow.

Sky 4 on Monday showed the waist high predicament for people forced to wade through muddy water and not knowing what was below.

"We need action to save our home,” said homeowner Shannon Hall.

The county has not acted on the issue because it’s a 1954 state-built soil conservation lake. The county and volunteers did, however, respond today with sandbags to help hold back the water -- now two inches from inside their home.

People who live near the lake said this is the worst conditions they can remember seeing. Officials said it’s the record amount of rain in North Texas that’s caused all of the problems.

"Too much rain, short amount of time," said Jimmy Joe Vrzalil, Kaufman County Commissioner.

County officials said they are working to get in touch with the appropriate agencies to find a solution.
