Jogger shoots juvenile robbery suspect in Arlington

Arlington police say a jogger shot a teenager who tried to rob him.

It happened around 7 a.m. Wednesday in the 600 block of Poly Webb Road, which is near Interstate 20 and Little Road in southwest Arlington.

The jogger told police he was on his way to a gym when he noticed a pickup truck following him.

"He had seen the truck the day before," explained Arlington Lt. Chris Cook. "He felt it was chasing him and looking at him."

Police say the jogger ducked into a parking lot to hide but the truck with two men came after him. The truck circled around him and the teenager jumped out to rob him at gunpoint. The jogger was also armed and shot the teen in the leg.

Police say the jogger fired 10 to 12 shots. One hit the 16-year-old suspect and two hit a nearby business, but no one was at work yet. Four to five shots hit the pickup truck.

The suspect fled the scene in the damaged pickup. Police later found the truck abandoned and determined it had been reported stolen.

Officers got a tip that the suspect got into a black SUV with a woman. They found them still in the area a short time later. The juvenile suspect was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The jogger was detained but later released by police.

Police are still investigating the case and questioning the woman in the SUV about her role in the crime. The suspect’s name will not be released because of his age.
