Inmate who escaped from Rowlett hospital captured

The inmate who escaped from a hospital in Rowlett early Wednesday morning is now back at the place where it all started.

Jose-Maria Pederaza-Cervantes was captured near Interstate 30 and Dalrock Road. He was wearing only his boxers at the time.

He had taken off from the Lake Pointe Medical Center in Rowlett.

He allegedly broke free from his shackles while a guard was in the restroom and used his head to smash through a third-floor window, police said.

The guard struggled briefly with Pederaza-Cervantes, but police said he still managed to jump out of the window.

Officers found his orange jumpsuit and a trail of blood along the banks of Lake Ray Hubbard. They believe he was trying to steal a boat.

They finally caught up to him when he tried to cross the interstate. Dozens of people called 911 to report seeing a nearly naked man in traffic.

Once in custody, Pederaza-Cervantes was rushed back to the hospital.

He reportedly lost a lot of blood while he was on the run, but police did not say whether it was life threatening.

Four Garland ISD schools were placed in "lockout" mode during the manhunt.

There was extra security in place and only registered students and staff were allowed into Schrade Middle, Giddens-Steadham Elementary, Pearson Elementary and Herfurth Elementary.

Pederaza-Cervantes was originally being held in the Rockwall County jail for felony drug charges. It's not clear why he was at the hospital in the first place.
