Hundreds of North Texans are lined up outside the Tesla Motors Gallery at NorthPark Center ready to put down a deposit for a new car.

Tesla plans to unveil its latest electric vehicle Thursday evening. The Model 3 is drawing a lot of interest because it has a surprisingly low base price – reported to be around $35,000.

That’s a bargain compared to the company’s other two models, which start around $70,000. The lower price is attributed to cheaper batteries made in the United States.

The new electric car is also expected to have a range of at least 200 miles when fully charged. That’s about double what drivers get from competitors Nissan and BMW in that price range.

Potential buyers are being allowed to put down a $1,000 deposit.

The line at NorthPark Center grew so large Thursday morning it was outside the building. But those not willing to wait will also be able to reserve a car online after Thursday night’s unveiling.

The new car is scheduled to go on sale at the end of next year.
