Ft. Worth officer injured in shooting discharged from hospital

A Fort Worth police officer shot in the line of duty nearly two weeks ago left the hospital Wednesday to continue his recovery at home, and he was given a hero's sendoff.

Sgt. Shane Drake, a 19-year veteran of the force, waved to a crowd of more than 100.

He emerged from Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital to cheers and applause from nurses, doctors and citizens.

On the other side of the street, a solid line of officers stood, saluting their fellow officer.

Drake was shot twice during a welfare check at a house in southwest Fort Worth.

The man who shot the officer in the abdomen and the hand, 40-year-old Wendell King, was killed when officers with Drake returned fire.

Drake still has a long recovery ahead, but he reportedly has every intention of returning to work as soon as he is well.
