Barbers and hairstylists do more than cut your hair. They can be a friend, a therapist -- and in the case of Canadian barber Franz Jacob, a hero.
That’s what people are calling him after a photo has gone viral of Jacob with his client, 6-year-old Wyatt Lafrenière. He has autism, and his mother, Fauve Lafrenière, posted the photo on Facebook to show the extra care Jacob gives Wyatt and other clients.
Wyatt doesn’t sit still for long, so Jacob follows him around, cutting his hair when he can. And when Wyatt decided to lay on the floor, Jacob did the same.
“He just decided to go on the floor, so I followed him,” Jacob told CTV News.
According to CBC, Wyatt is the youngest, but Jacob has several regulars with autism, and he makes sure they are as comfortable as possible -- even if it takes over an hour to cut their hair.
Parents know to bring their children at the end of the day, and Jacob makes sure it’s a quiet atmosphere. He lets them wander around the shop, eat candy, and be themselves in his old-fashioned barber shop in Rouyn-Noranda, in Quebec's Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.
As for people calling him an everyday hero, Jacob told CTV News, “I don’t see myself like that, but I’m just doing my best all the time here for my community.”
