Hometown Hero: Dr. Linda Cunningham

The month of March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and the designated color is blue. Dr. Linda Cunningham of Fort Worth dyed her hair a beautiful blue.  She's raising awareness about colon cancer, a disease that killed her husband, Dr. Henry Cunningham. He died in January 2014. He had a family history for colon cancer but didn't know it until he was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer.

Dr. Linda Cunningham teaches pathology at the UNT Health Science Center in Fort Worth. For the month of March her blue hair has raised $5,300 to give to the Colon Cancer Alliance so people can get  colon cancer screenings. Dr. Cunningham's still raisng money. If you'd like to contribute log on to http://cca.convio.net/goto/henrycunningham.

Because she exceeded her fund-raising goal, Dr. Cunningham will have her blue hair shaved off at an ice cream social on campus on April 1st.  She says that's no April Fool's joke and she has no fear about having a shaved head. Dr. Cunningham told me that if people ask what happend to her hair, that will be be another opportunity to tell people that colon cancer screenings need to start at age 50 or earlier if there's a family  history; colon cancer is preventable and if caught early it's very treatable.
