Hometown Hero: Shirley Wheeler

For 36 years, Shirley Wheeler taught in the Dallas ISD. She retired from N. W. Harlee Elementary school where she taught first grade.

Did she stay away from school? No.

For 5 years she's volunteered at St. Philip's School and Community Center in South Dallas.

Mrs. Wheeler's school nickname is "sweetie" because that's what her 7 year old grandson calls her; he's a first grader at St. Philip's. Students also call her "shero"...an acronym highlighting her attributes...successful, helper, encourager, respectful and optimistic.

Mrs. Wheeler helps all of The Saints, from pre-K 2 to 6th graders. She reads to students, grades papers, creates beautiful billboards and volunteers on school committees.

The teachers appreciate the extra help from this retired teacher but Mrs. Wheeler knows nothing about retirement. She says "once a teacher, always a teacher".
