Four Dallas ISD schools with Confederate links likely to have names changed

Dallas ISD school board moved one step closer on Thursday to changing the names of schools named to honor Confederate leaders.

The board agreed that four schools named after Confederate leaders will likely have their names changed: Stonewall Jackson, Robert E Lee, William Cabell and Albert Sydney Johnston

But the board learned a total of 21 schools have names with some kind of Confederate tie, and that led some board members to suggest other schools may also have unacceptable names but more research is necessary.

The board spent a lot of time Thursday discussing the process for determining the new names and whether or not to waive the current policy and pass a resolution to expedite the changes.

They wrapped up with the board president telling administrators to come back in the next few weeks with more information about how an expedited process will work and also outlined parameters for each school committee to work under as they come up with a new name.

A resolution could be before the board soon with a vote at the next meeting in two weeks.
