The gift shop at the Fort Worth Zoo was destroyed by fire on Thanksgiving night.

No people or animals were hurt, as the zoo was closed at the time.

“There were no animals nearby, there were animal exhibits affected,” said Alexis Wilson, Fort Worth Zoo Director of Communications. “Thanks to the quick response of our own security staff and also the unbelievable response of the people at the Fort Worth Police Department, everything was contained to that one small building.”

Firefighters found the building in flames so intense they backed off and fought it from outside.

The cause of the fire is unknown and the investigation is continuing. Arson is not suspected.

The zoo re-opened as planned on Friday morning.
