Fort Worth school raises $5K for wounded officers

Students at Southwest Christian School in Fort Worth raised $5,000 in one day for the two Fort Worth police officers who were wounded while responding to a suicide call.

Officer Ray Azucena and Officer Xavier Serrano were injured when responding to a shooting call Friday night that turned into a murder-suicide.

Azucena was treated and released that night, but Serrano just went home Wednesday.

Azucena thanked the students for their support and generosity and shared a little bit about what happened last Friday night.

"I want to thank God too because if it was not for him, I wouldn't be standing here. He put me where I needed to be that day. You know he protected me,” he said. “That bullet hit me right in the chest, right in the heart. Got a big old bruise here. But by the grace of God, I'm here and alive."

"Usually when we pray for someone, we don't really get to meet the people we pray for,” said student Colt Smith. “We got to see that our prayers were actually answered, and that was really cool. And that was relieving to all of us because we all were really worried about this family."

Azucena expects to return to duty within the next three weeks.
