The former Marine accused of murdering a University of North Texas student was found guilty.

A Denton County jury convicted Eric Johnson Monday afternoon. He shot and killed Sara Mutschlechner after a house part on New Year’s Day 2016.

Prosecutors said Johnson shot into Mutschlechner’s vehicle from his car after an argument between people in both vehicles.

“As a trained Marine, he knew exactly what he was doing when he shot at the carload of teenagers,” prosecutors argued.

Johnson’s defense lawyers had tried to argue conflicting testimony by witnesses in the car cast doubt on what really happened.

Johnson was discharged from the Marine Corps after he was arrested at a Yuma, Ariz. base last year.

The punishment phase of the trail will continue into Tuesday.
