Farmers Branch police chief holds open meeting on open carry rules

Farmers Branch's police chief held an open forum meeting Tuesday night to answer any questions residents may have on the new open carry laws that went into effect this year.

Chief Sid Fuller said  there have been no incidents involving open carry in Farmers Branch since the law went into effect. In fact, Fuller said he has not seen any one open carry yet.

However residents did fill The Branch Church on Valley View Lane for the forum tonight. One of the first questions asked was from someone asking if he as an average citizen can ask someone to prove they have a license if they are carrying.

The advice from police is no, but if someone is acting suspiciously call 911 and let officers determine the response.

Chief Fuller said he doesn't think the new rules will be an issue, "I don't think we're going to see a lot of differences, I think when the dusk settles. It's going to be pretty much business as usual."

Other departments have held or are holding similar forums. Grand Prairie had an overflow crowd a couple weeks ago and is holding a second meeting tonight.
