Family donates organs of Dallas 15-year-old shot dead

A Dallas 15-year-old shot and killed last week will live on after his family opted to donate his organs.

Roy Stuart was shot last Tuesday at the back of an Oak Cliff apartment complex in the 3200 block of Simpson Stuart Road. The South Oak Cliff HS freshman was shot in the head and ruled brain dead, but there was enough time for the family to decide to help out other people in need.

Grandmother Brenda Stuart said she was at the grocery store when she got the call that he grandson had been shot. When she arrived at the hospital and found out his condition, she worked to get in contact with Roy’s father who is in jail. He agreed to let his son’s organs help others live.

“He said ‘Mama, he says if my son’s death can save somebody else's child or somebody else’s life go ahead and do it,’” Brenda Stuart said. “In such a tragedy like this there is some good that can come out of it.”

The Stuart family’s sacrifice has saved four lives so far. His kidneys, liver, heart and lungs were donated.

“I hope and pray to God that whoever receives my baby's heart, that they would appreciate it cause he had a good heart,” Brenda Stuart said.

A vigil for Roy Stuart will be held Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the New Life Family Church on Frio Street in Oak Cliff.

Dallas police have few leads in Roy Stuart’s murder. Anyone with information is asked to contact Dallas police.
