Duncanville teacher expected to be fired for offensive tweet

A teacher at Duncanville High School will likely be fired for her comments online suggesting white people should kill themselves.

Vinita Hegwood, an English teacher, admitted to posting "Who the f--- made you dumb duck a-- crackers think I give a squat f--- about your opinions on my opinions RE: #Ferguson. Kill yourselves!" on her personal Twitter account Friday afternoon.

Hegwood did not mention the district or her role as a teacher in the tweet, and it's still unclear if any students or parents followed her or what exactly she was responding to.

The tweet and account were deleted shortly afterward.

The Duncanville school district said on Monday that Hegwood will be suspended without pay until the school board can vote on her termination.

"As an individual, Ms. Vinita Hegwood expressed an opinion on social media that is solely her own. She used her personal media account to make remarks that are offensive. While everyone has the right to free speech, as a teacher in the district, we believe the comments that are alleged to be made by Ms. Hegwood are absolutely reprehensible and we do not condone it," the district said.

The district said it wants to embrace and celebrate diversity. It
also points out that Hegwood was never back in the classroom after posting the tweet and that Hegwood does not have a history of other disciplinary action.

"It's a common sense thing," said Duncanville ISD spokesperson Lari Barager. "What offends the public certainly offends the administration of Duncanville ISD…those comments having been made in such a public way left the district no other option.

"I would say she needs to be a fired," said Lydia Flores, a parent of a Duncanville student. "That's crazy. The kind of work that she's doing now, she's all around different kind of kids and stuff."

Hegwood has been with the district for two years.

She was reportedly alone, without an attorney or union rep, in Monday morning's meeting with district officials.

FOX 4 knocked on her door Monday afternoon to get her response, but no one answered.
