Driver suspected of driving drunk and causing crash that killed his 2 children and girlfriend

Police believe speed and alcohol were factors in a crash on I-30 in Grand Prairie killed a woman and two young children.

Police say 26-year-old Demitri Gomez was driving westbound with his two kids and his girlfriend when he lost control and hit a light pole. All three passengers died.

The crash happened just after 9pm Friday. 29-year-old Monica Lopez was in the front passenger seat and died at the scene. His children, 4-year-old Alexxa Gomez and 3-year-old Armani Gomez were in the back seat. Both were wearing seat belts but were not in child seats as required by law. Police say evidence at the scene suggests alcohol was involved.

“It's very difficult on the officers and we have to fight through those emotions as we investigate these types of cases and be the advocate for these children that lost their lives,” said Grand Prairie Police Sgt. Eric Hansen.

Police say Gomez has a criminal history; including a prior DWI conviction from 2015 when he was caught driving while intoxicated with a child in the car. Gomez has also been arrested for drugs and resisting arrest.

Gomez is under police watch at Methodist Hospital in North Oak Cliff. He will face three counts of intoxication manslaughter when he recovers. Police are still waiting for test results to come back on his blood alcohol content. He faces up to 20 years in prison for each charge if convicted.
