Dallas officer killed in crash during funeral escort

- Dallas Police have identified a man accused of striking and killing a motorcycle officer early Saturday morning as 25-year-old Adrian Breedlove.

Senior Corporal Jamie Givens was with the department for 32 years. A source says Breedlove blew a breathalyzer test that showed a blood alcohol level of .19, more than twice the legal limit.

55-year-old Givens was with his unit, escorting the body of a fellow officer who died of cancer, to East Texas when the crash happened.

He had his emergency lights on and was blocking the eastbound on ramp to I-20 at Bonnie View road.

Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall says Breedlove, the 25-year-old driver of a Kia Sportage, hit him at a high rate of speed. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Breedlove then crashed into a concrete divider. He remained on scene and was arrested for suspicion of DWI.

“We stand here today with our hearts broken.” Said Chief Hall. “We are just asking you to keep the Givens family in your prayers. Keep Dallas Police Department in your prayers. Keep the city of Dallas in your prayers.”

Police officers who knew givens say the towering officer was well respected and looked up to, not just for his tall stature.

Breedlove is charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon.

Given leaves behind two sons. The name of the driver has not yet been released.
