Fire crews were called to the old Mercantile Commerce Building in Downtown Dallas Friday morning because of a small fire.

Jason Evans with Dallas-Fire Rescue said the fire started around 10:30 a.m. Construction crews were welding in an abandoned elevator shaft on the 20th floor and sparks fell onto trash on the first floor.

Smoke traveled up the elevator shaft and could be seen coming out of the building in the 1700 block of Commerce Street. FOX 4 viewer Mona Agular captured video from a nearby office building.

By the time SKY 4 arrived on scene there were several fire trucks and dozens of firefighters standing outside the building. They seemed to have the fire under control.

The building was vacant and under construction. There were no reports of injuries.
