Dog thought to be dead following shooting reunites with owner

A Dallas dog owner thought his beloved pet, 6-year-old Princess, was put to sleep after she was shot by a Dallas police officer. However, nearly a week later, the family learned she's still alive.

The off-duty officer who shot Princess was walking his own dog last week. He fired his gun three times at Princess and her brother, Rocky, a mixed-breed pit bull, after police say the two got out of their owner's backyard and charged at the officer and his dog.

The same bullet that grazed Rocky is what Rocky's and Princess' family thought killed Princess at the time. It went between her shoulder blades, down her side and out past her elbow.

They say that animal services told them as protocol, Princess would likely be put to sleep.

"We couldn't hear lung sounds when she first came in," said Dr. Cate McManus with Dallas Animal Services.

But doctors didn't give up. They saved Princess, a mixed-breed rescue, and then made the unexpected call to her owners.

Princess and her owner, Juan Torres, reunited Wednesday.

"Just shock, man," said Torres. "Just complete shock. I don't even have any words."

Princess ‘owners were cited because the dogs got out and didn't have updated vaccine records.

Before getting Princess back, the Torres family agreed to have Rocky neutered and take an animal training class,

After observing Princess for a week, vets don't think she's dangerous and they say she wouldn't give her back if she was.
