DeSOTO, Texas - A teenager was arrested at DeSoto High School for allegedly bringing a gun and ammunition to school Wednesday.
Police arrested Isaiah Manual Joe Reyes on Wednesday. The 17-year-old high school student is being held in the DeSoto jail on a third-degree felony charge for unlawful carrying a weapon in a school.
DeSoto PD says when a student tipped off school administrators Wednesday morning at DeSoto High school, police were able to quickly identify Reyes and arrest him in school.
Inside Reyes' backpack, police found an unloaded .25 caliber pistol along with a loaded magazine.
District officials say the message that students have a stake in their own safety at school seems to be resonating.
"For months we've been we've been reminding our student that if you see something say something,” explained DeSoto Spokesperson Tiffanie Blackmon. “We've sent out messages. We've had campaigns on social media just reminding them that if you see a friend that's not acting normal, if you hear something that's of concern, if you hear something that's of concern to let someone know."
A number of the students leaving school on Wednesday were not aware of the incident. The district says it sent out notifications to parents after Reyes was arrested.
DeSoto PD says Reyes did not make any threats of violence against any other students or faculty or any threats on social media.
This Thursday is the last day of the school year of DeSoto High School.
