Dallas woman finds suspected burglar in her home

A Dallas business owner recently walked into her home to find a burglar inside.

He tied her up and demanded money, all while apologizing.

The victim, Ellen Kreagar, called it bizarre and a harrowing episode in her home.

“I come in and I go, ‘Oh my god!’ Because it’s been ransacked, and all of a sudden, I see just a glimmer of a figure and he said, ‘Move that way and don’t look at me’ and he had a gun to my head.’”

Kreagar said it happened when she came home Monday afternoon around 1:30.

In her home, the suspect broke in through a bathroom window, where police lifted a latent fingerprint.

“He did not take everything in the purse, but he took everything out of the wallet; the grocery store card, everything,” said Kreagar.

Kreagar says the man told her he needed rope to tie her up and walked her through her home where they found some.

Kreagar designs and makes clothing and clothing patterns.

The man used fabric from her work area to blindfold her.

“He apologizes a couple of times,” said. “…He said that, ‘I’m so sorry to have to do that’ and I said, ‘No, you're not,’ and he didn’t answer and…you don’t argue with somebody who has a gun.”

In addition to Kreagar's ID and credit cards, her computer, iPad and iPhone were all taken.

“Then he asked for the car keys and he left me my house keys,” she said. “Well, he started the car. Within 10 seconds, I was across the street.”

Dallas police tracked down the suspect in 24 hours.

First, they got an ID from fingerprint lifted from the bathroom. Then, they tracked Kreagar's credit card purchases and surveillance videos at those purchases.

“We love our Dallas police,” said Kreagar. “They were, they are superheroes. I mean, I want the biggest batch of cookies with the biggest red bow to take to my detectives.”

The suspect, Andres Vera, is in Dallas County jail with a $200,000 bond.

Vera’s been to prison and was wanted for parole violation on burglary. He also has priors for robbery and drugs.
