Dallas SWAT standoff ends with suspect dead

An hours-long standoff in the Lake Highlands area of Dallas ended after the suspect was found dead inside an apartment.

The standoff started about 6:30 a.m. Thursday after Dallas County Sheriff's deputies tried to serve a warrant on firearms and assault charges. Police said the man barricaded himself inside an apartment complex at the Sunset Terrace Apartments near Greenville Avenue and Forest Lane.

The standoff ended without incident sometime after 8:30 a.m. when officials said the suspect was found dead. It wasn't immediately known if it was from a self-inflicted injury.

Police started knocking on doors and evacuating people from their apartments after a shot was fired by the suspect inside the apartment where he was located.

Residents were allowed to return after the standoff ended, but it was a tense two hours.

At one point, police took ladders to balconies and helped those residents leave from the back of their apartments. FOX4 captured video of at least one child being carried down a ladder.
