A veteran Dallas police officer was seriously injured after being run over by an SUV outside a club in northwest Dallas early Monday morning.

According to the Greater Dallas chapter of the National Latino Law Enforcement Organization, Officer Edmundo Lujan will face a long recovery. He has a dislocated hip, lacerated scalp, broken fibula, broken ankle and broken vertebrae.

He was hit around midnight Sunday while working an off-duty security job at the Kalua Discotheque near Interstate 35E and Northwest Highway.

Police said the there was a fight inside the club and the suspect was escorted out by employees. He was asked to leave and a valet retrieved his vehicle.

The suspect, Eduardo Gonzalez-Rios, backed up very quickly and hit one off-duty officer. Then he drove forward and ran completely over Officer Lujan, police said.

At that point police said the officers opened fire on the suspect. Video from the scene showed his black SUV riddled with bullet holes.

Lujan was taken to Parkland Hospital. He is alert and able to speak, but his fellow officers are still asking for prayers.

“Here with Lujan.... He's talking, responsive and cracking jokes....keep him and his family in your prayers... Great job by Dr. Alexander Eastman and his Parkland staff.....Grade A!!!” Greater Dallas NLLEO wrote on Facebook.

Chief David Brown has already been to the hospital to visit the officer. He tweeted, “Please keep our officer in your thoughts and prayers.”

Gonzalez-Rios was shot in the arm during the incident and taken to Parkland Hospital for treatment. He and three other suspects are in Dallas police custody.

The first officer who was hit was not hurt.
