Tarrant County tax protest document has misleading challenge date

A document sent to Tarrant County homeowners misleadingly claims people have already missed a chance to challenge property tax assessments.

The notice from the Tarrant Appraisal District clearly indicates that the deadline to protest a home’s tax value is May 2. But that's not the whole story.

State law actually indicates that owners of a single-family residential homestead are entitled to a hearing if they file a notice of protest before June 1.

A spokesperson for the Tarrant Appraisal District says they were following state law when they published that may second deadline, but it's just not the final deadline.

Viewers who FOX4 spoke to say they feel duped and they were lead to believe the clock had run out. But homeowners still have until Tuesday, May 31 to file a protest.
